Let’s Bury The Word ‘Slut’
- Megan Walker
The London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) is a feminist agency providing advocacy, support and counselling to women abused by their intimate partners. LAWC defines feminism as “supporting women’s rights and interests based on a belief in social, political, legal and economic equality of the sexes.” Committed to its feminist beliefs, the agency advocates for personal, social and political change to end violence and abuse against women.
All women are potential victims of violence and abuse for no other reason than their gender. It’s irrelevant what they wear, where they work, what their religious beliefs or associations are, what culture they are from, what their income status or educational background. It matters only that they were born female. In a patriarchal society where men have power and privilege, women are often controlled and dominated in the workplace, the streets and in their homes.
Contrary to popular belief, the most dangerous place for a woman continues to be her home. The place where fairy tales are all about living happily ever after and living safely often end far differently and unhappily for abused women. For many women their home becomes a torture chamber, their own personal hell. Their homes are places of verbal, emotional, psychological and physical terrorism. For many women, leaving is never an option because we know, as do they, that they are at risk of death should they attempt to escape. Their fairy tale ends with pain, suffering and sometimes death.
Name-calling is one tactic of abuse utilized to control them. They are called slut, whore, skank and bitch. Each name hits them like a sharp slap to the face or kick to the gut. After constantly being called a slut, a whore, a skank, a bitch, women come to believe they are deserving of being called these names. Why would the man that says he loves and respects them, call her such hate-filled names if she didn’t deserve it?
These women are often not involved in the feminist movement or any political action group. Their efforts are spent on surviving the pain they feel that day. Their time is hoping they survive until tomorrow. Some come for counselling by climbing out a kitchen window because they are locked into their homes. Others sneak out while their abusive partner is at work. They pray he won’t come home early. They know the consequence of not being home if he does.
We’ve heard from these women about slutwalks. They wonder why women are calling themselves the very name their abuser calls them? These women wonder why their voices aren’t being represented. These women have lived the victimization. They know there is no reclaiming the word slut because it is like a weapon coming from the mouth of an abuser.
These victims can’t protests or march. But the London Abused Women’s centre and other radical feminists are hearing the victim’s voices. Their voices are being heard by feminists who understand the tactics used by abusers to control women. The London Abused Women’s Centre and other radical feminists represent those who can’t speak when they stand against slutwalks.
Slut is not a word that can, or should be, reclaimed. It is a word that needs to be buried never to be heard again.

Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wished to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I will be subscribing to your rss feed and I hope you write again very soon!
Women have been fighting for equal rights and equality for as long as time. If we hadn't fought so hard we wouldn't have been able to accomplish so much or be where we are in society today. Think of the countries where women's rights are unimportant and never heard and imagine living in a society like that. From time to time we have all endured being called hate-filled names like slut, whore etc. For women to embrace an event, although thought to be empowering to women, known as the "slut" walk is ridiculous. In my opinion the word "slut" should be abolished and in it's place we should be embracing a name to be proud of. Why not call it the "Voices of Empowered Women's Walk" !!!! Michelle Austin
Well said Michelle. I agree.
As a survivor, as a woman, as a Slutwalk supporter and, as a LAWC supporter. I believe it is important to recognize allies when they are present. To enforce and demand accountability from perpetrators. Empowerment has many faces / genders/ and paths but in the end the goal is to end violence. To rid the world, our communities , and our loved ones of violent acts. To create a safe world for everyone. To assume that those involved with the Slutwalk have no connection to victimization is callous and irresponsible. I have chosen to disclose but to impose such a disclosure with political tactics demands questioning from your co-workers and the community as a whole. I also question the definition of Feminism, because mine is; Feminism is the eradication of all oppression.
Dear Ms Williams,
I appreciate your definition of feminism.LAWC's definition, while perhaps more detailed, is consistent with yours. LAWC's definition was developed collaboratively by the board and staff as a way to explain to the community the agency's philosophy.
We agree it is important to demand accountability from perpetrators. The agency's Shine the Light on Woman Abuse and Silent Witness campaigns speaks to this. The campaign goals are to shift the shame and responsibility for abuse from victims to abusers.
We share your goal of ending violence and abuse against women. It is the process by which we get there that differs. As an agency, we have a responsibility to stand with the women we serve who are often silenced and forced to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisal from their abusers. The term "slut" is used against women as a tactic to control them.
The Mayor of Strathroy recently asked the community to pledge to stop using the 'R' word (retard) and to use the word 'respect' instead. We can't imagine any benefit in reclaiming words like 'retard.' In the same way, we would ask the community to pledge to stop using the 'S' word (slut). We would apply the same rationale.
Thank you for your response and support.

wow! Why can't I think of things like that?
As a long time feminist and lesbian artist, here in
London Ontario I protest Megan Walker's lack of
insight into the Slutwalks that have taken place
worldwide. She does not understand what they
mean and how women are protesting power taken
away from them and how they are taking it back.
I am also offended that Megan Walker is allowed
to use the official site for the London Abused
Women's Centre for her ill conceived ideas.
Dear Ms Riley,
Thank you for your response. The opinions in "Lets Bury the Word 'Slut'" are those of the London Abused Women's Centre and as such are appropriately posted on LAWC's website. As you likely know from the numerous blogs, stories, columns, radio interviews and television debates, there is strong opposition from feminists worldwide to slutwalks. While disagreeing, the London Abused Women's Centre appreciates and respects your view on the issue.
